From portraits of women in the archive of Álvaro de Barros Geraldo, marked by an oppressive colonial gaze, this work proposes a rescue of their gestures and signs of refusal, discomfort, or resistance, subtly inscribed in the photographs.
Based on the book Razões da Pertença de Portugal no Ultramar (Reasons for Portugal's Belonging Overseas) (Marcelo Caetano, 1971), a blackout poetry exercise is carried out that deconstructs and reconfigures the official discourse. In the tension between the ideology of the text and the captured faces, a counter-narrative emerges that subverts the language of the empire and inscribes silenced presences. It is in the text–image confrontation that new readings are constructed, distorting the language and hierarchies of the past.
